    Overview

    In a former medieval fortress

La Chiara was once a medieval fortress and has been 'de-gentrified' over the centuries, becoming one of the main farm buildings on an extensive 900 hectares property.

The 6 holiday apartments for rent are still named after the peasant families who last lived here. The square building surrounds a large, shady courtyard planted with climbing roses, lavender and a deliciously scented lime tree. The arched entrance admits a cool breeze and leads out into the wide landscaped garden with a pool and a tennis court.

The view from here is spectacular and surveys the entire valley, but your eye will finally settle on the dominating Monte Amiata, Tuscany's highest mountain. The lower parts of the valley consist of wheatfields and olive groves, woodland covering the upper reaches.

The entire building has been carefully restored. When furnishing the apartments, a lot of subtlety was used to leave the ancient materials, such as the terracotta floor and the beautiful open roof beams intact, but at the same time to fit in a modern equipment.

During the summer months you will be able to have your meals outside. The garden is furnished with tables and chairs for all apartments, each far enough from the other to guarantee each party sufficient privacy. Children are welcome to La Chiara, in fact at the far end of the garden there is a playground with swing, see-saw and slide.

Twice a week, guests can enjoy a communal dinner. The excellent cook prepares homemade pasta, vegetables from the own vegetable garden, game from the local fields and forests and fruit from the own orchard to the most delicious meals. Guests can sit either in the courtyard under the fragrant lime tree or in the communal dining room with fireplace.

This impressive house belongs to a a large property which extends over the hills overlooking the Val d'Orcia, an enchanting and miraculously unspoilt valley in southern Tuscany, listed as UNESCO world heritage in 2004. Midway between Florence and Rome, the estate is also within easy reach of Siena, Arezzo, Perugia, Assisi and Orvieto. Renaissance and medieval gems such as Pienza, Montepulciano, Monticchiello and Montalcino and the Abbey of Sant'Antimo are only a few miles away.

The countryside around the estate abounds in lovely walks in the woods and the typical "crete senesi" (clay hills) of the region. Many walks have been signposted over the last years by the local trekking association. The food is considered the best in Tuscany and famous wines such as the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Brunello di Montalcino can be sampled in the local cellars.

Perfect location for visiting Val d'Orcia. It is really peaceful and silent over there. The view at the swimming pool is stunning. Never had such a friendly host.
The playground for the kids was safe and in the shadow. They couldn’t be more happy.

Efficiency, hospitality, friendliness in a wonderful setting, the structure is cared for down to the smallest detail and the location is strategic to be able to reach the Val d'Orcia, I recommend staying here and having dinner at the mouth after work!

This was one of the most perfect stays I have ever experienced. Everything was perfect. The setting was peaceful and beautiful, the apartment had a feel of relaxed elegance, the linens and towels were sumptuous, the reading materials were interesting and some pertained to the locale and its history, the kitchen was appointed with anything one would need for making meals and the radiant heat was very cozy against the windy nights. The outstanding aspect of our stay, however, was the staff. We had requested a special list of groceries be stocked, and on our arrival everything was just as we requested. Attentive service and excellent communication. We were afforded our privacy, but help was also near at hand if needed.

As soon as you enter the courtyard, you feel at home and Lorena at the reception is very welcoming, friendly and professional. A structure from the past: several rustic houses gathered around a well-maintained courtyard like the rest of the structure: gardens, pergola, swimming pool...
The apartment was also stylish, spacious, very comfortable and very clean. We certainly enjoyed the aperitif found in the kitchen (wine, Tuscan bread and salami and oil produced by them). All framed by the magnificent views of the Val D'Orcia.
    Sandra, August 2024

My mother, sister and I had high expectations for our stay at the Beco Apartment in La Chiara, and they were exceeded in every way. If you are looking for stunning views, rural relaxation and an elegant, pared-down environment, this is your place.

With our lives being very busy prior to our trip, we had not carefully planned our itinerary in Tuscany, aside from basing ourselves in La Chiara. As it turns out, this was the best plan. All we had to do was arrive to realize that we didn't have to go anywhere to enjoy our time in Val d'Orcia. Sitting on the lawn and taking in the view with a glass of wine was great, the food at the nearby restaurant was excellent and the apartment's kitchen was well equipped for cooking for ourselves after visiting the weekly markets.

Finally, Lorena the manager is a dream. She is extremely knowledgeable about the area and is extremely willing to help guests with everything from making reservations at the most delicious restaurants to finding the hours of the nearest Gregorian chants. We followed her suggestions and were very glad we did!

We were completely satisfied with our visit here and can recommend it without reservation. We can't wait, so go back!
    Laura, June 2023

Me, my wife and our two girls stayed with a family of friends in the Ronda apartment during the week of August.

La Chiare is a real wonder. An oasis of peace, with an ancient charm and a true rustic style that one would expect to find in a former farm.

All perfect. Location, exterior with a well-kept lawn, swimming pool, children's area, tennis court, fruit trees, organic garden, donkeys.
Stunning views over the valley. What I have listed, without going into detail, however, cannot suffice to describe the air of serenity and joviality that we breathed among these magnificent and historic walls. Undoubted merit must be given to the helpful and amiable approach of all the people who work in the structure.
Special thanks to Lorena, perfect manager but above all a person with a strong sensitivity. Thanks for everything. We will be back soon.

Sehr gute, sehr professionelle, kompetente Managerin. Sie war nicht aufdringlich, aber bei jeder Notwendigkeit erreichbar, hat super Tipps gegeben. Hut ab! Von mehreren Unterkünfte, die wir in diesem Urlaub erlebt haben, war das eine der BESTEN!

You know when you write a review six months after renting and use a photo of that place as your screensaver that your hearts are swaying. That's how we felt about our three-week stay at Bersagliere, an apartment in La Chiara. We choose La Chiara almost on a whim. I usually do research before renting, but not this time. There was something about the history, the somewhat remote location, the stunning beauty of La Chiara combined with the nearby garden of the estate that prompted our booking. Multiple choices for day trips were part of the lure. La Chiara was all of the above and more.

As you enter the courtyard, a train bell invites you to ring if you want to try an olive oil sample. Olive oil, which we enjoyed for dinner in the courtyard the night we arrived, as if at an olive oil tasting lunch, is a big part of La Chiara. The oil is pressed, bottled and sold on site.

At La Chiara, my husband had an unexpected medical situation. The manager, Lorena and Donata, the owner, couldn't have been more helpful or supportive. Our stay took a slightly different direction than planned, but the tranquility of the estate was a treat for body and soul.

Many of the people who rent at La Chiara are repeat guests. We hope to join them. If you are an independent traveler looking for an authentic experience that will stay with you for a long time, I highly recommend La Chiara.

The property's location makes excursions to Siena, Assisi, Orvieto, Perugia, Arezzo and Florence an easy day trip.

Florence and Rome can be reached by train in one and a half hours from the nearby station Chiusi.

In San Quirico d'Orcia make sure you see the Horti Leonini, an early Renaissance garden, as well as the western door in the city wall and the Collegiata (main church).

Montalcino is beautifully situated on a hill inhabited since Etruscan times, swathed in vineyards and olive groves. It is a quiet, affluent, attractive town with pretty buildings and flower-filled squares, and many shops selling the Brunello di Montalcino.

Montepulcino is a graceful Tuscan hill town, best known for its Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which was being praised by connoisseurs over 200 years ago and can certainly contend with Italy's best today.

Pienza, the unfinished "utopian” city, was commissioned by Pope Pius II in 1459. In just three years the cathedral, the papal and bishop’s palaces and the central part of the town were completed, but the extensive project ended abruptly when Pius died only two years after the consacration of the cathedral.

Monte Oliveto Maggiore: This abbey was founded by three Sienese noblemen who left the city to live a life dedicated to prayer, religion, etc. and who founded the Olivetan order – an off-shoot of the Benedictines. The most important thing to see at this still active and working Monastery is the cycle of frescoes that decorate the monumental cloister. They describe the live of Saint Benedict and were painted by Signorelli and Sodoma. There are also some beautiful marquetry stalls in the church itself.  It is a very magical and serene place set in the midst of exceptionally beautiful countryside. It is home to a dozen monks who specialize in restoring old books, and make wine, honey and olive oil.

Sant’Anna in Camprena is a rambling monastery on the road between Pienza and San Quirico d’Orcia. A very romantic setting which served as location for the film The English Patient. In the refectory there is a fresco by the renaissance painter Giovanni Antonio Bazzi, known as Il Sodoma.

Sant'Antimo is surely one of the loveliest Romanesque buildings in all of Italy. It is hard to imagine a more sympathetic combination of architectural grace and natural setting. Originally founded by Charlemagne in 800, the abbey was once home to a prominent Benedictine community. Creamy stone bricks, luminous Volterran alabaster, playful carvings and frescoes of animals give it a peculiarly sunny air. A group of French Cistercian monks now runs the abbey, celebrating Mass with Gregorian chants several times a day.

The landscape in this region of Tuscany is spectacular: The Crete Senesi are the eroded clay hills in the Orcia valley. These strange, pale, barren looking slopes, with their bare cliffs, broken gullies and white Jurassic limestone, look altogehter more lunar than terrestial.

Tuscany is famous for its Hot springs, belonging to a geothermical system that more or less encircles Monte Amiata: the most spectacular is Saturnia in the south west of the region. Steaming water collects in a number of white limestone basins - a rare natural spectacle and great fun to bathe in! Swimming possible both in the natural basins and in smart thermal baths. Saturnia offers a wide range of comforts and even a sauna.
Close to the property is Bagno Vignoni which has been popular since Etruscan times. St. Catherine of Siena is said to have appreciated its thearpeutic qualities, as is Lorenzo the Magnificent, whose family built the splendid arcaded pool - a kind of flooded, bubbling piazza, famously used by Tarkowsky for some of the more surreal passages of his film Nolstalgia. Not far from this antique piazza there is a hotel with a lovely open air swimming pool, fed from hot springs. This is also available to external guests.
Bagni San Filippo may go into the books as the world's smallest thermal spa - a telephone booth, a few old houses, outdoor spring in the middle of the woods with glistening limestone formations and one small hotel with a public pool.
Just 10 km from the property you will find the thermal spa Terme di Chianciano with a highly modern health and thermal centre. Those wanting to combine holidays with a wellness break can enjoy fango baths, cosmetic and therapeutic treatments, solarium, massages and hydromassages.
In San Casciano dei Bagni, 30 km away, a few years ago a Medicivilla was converted into a luxury spa center. The view from the pool to the Orcia valley is breathtaking.

Outlet: Fashion addicts can splurge out at the famous Prada factory outlet, which lies on to road to Florence.

Fontana, the last apartment to be restored by the owner of La Chiara, is comparable in charm and size to Bersagliere. It is located on the first floor and is reached from the courtyard by an exterior staircase (10 steps). The rooms look out onto the garden, the hills and the woods on one side and the Val d'Orcia and the Monte Amiata on the other. The owner’s aim has as ever been to create a warm and welcoming interior, which affords all the comfort we are accustomed to today. The rooms with beamed ceilings and terracotta flooring are well sized and open onto the most exciting views of the valley, looking out over the garden and the Val d’Orcia on one side and the Mount Amiata on the other. The walls have been washed in a light terracotta glaze, creating a light and friendly atmosphere. The decoration of Fonte is an eclectical mixture of family antiques, furniture made by the local carpenter and modern paintings inspired by the nature surrounding the estate.

This apartment is an unusual place. Upon entering the house from the courtyard you will be stunned by the large and beautifully decorated living room, which has 3 windows looking out over the valley. The sofa and armchairs are grouped around a grand fireplace, whereas the antique dining table stands at the other end of the main room. A lovely old refectory table serves as a sideboard.
