    Overview

    Tradition's comfort

Villa Orvieto is a luxuriously restored stone farmhouse surrounded by rolling hills and olive grove. The excellent taste of its owners is reflected throughout the house in a wonderful balance of antique furniture combined with modern conveniences, including Internet WIFI connection and air condition.

The property consists of of two adjacent stone houses: the main house sleeps up to ten guests and a smaller guest house sleeps four. The two stone houses are located just 10 metres from each other, connected by a charming pergola. The main house can be rented alone for ten or less people (closing the guest house).

Outside there is an elegantly furnished loggia with couches and open views over the countryside, a second outdoor living room and a pergola just off of the kitchen furnished with table and chairs for fourteen people.

A few steps from the house is a panoramic swimming pool and a tennis court. The house is surrounded by a manicured garden of roses, lavender and many other flowers.

Access road: the property is accessed by an unpaved gravel road in fair condition with some bumpy sections. It may not be suitable for low or sportive cars. Kindly note: there are few stairways/steps around the property; young children should be supervised all the time. Wireless broadband internet: Please be advised that due to the rural location of the property the internet connection might be intermittent and at an inferior speed than what you are used to.

Villa Orvieto lies near the medieval city of Orvieto in Umbria. This region is justifiably described as the "green heart of Italy." Located in a beautiful setting, Villa Orvieto is conveniently situated within daytrip distance of Montelpulciano, Pienza, Montalcino, and all of the enchanting hill towns of southern Tuscany, as well as all of Umbria.

Popular landmarks include Todi, Spoleto, Assisi, Perugia and Pienza, but it is also possible to wander away from the beaten tourist track to explore hidden gems like Civita di Bagnoregio, in Lazio, or the spectacular gardens of Villa Lante and Castello Ruspoli di Vignanello, near Viterbo.

If you don't want to drive, you can take a train to Rome in about an hour. The closest towns are Guardea, Baschi and Montecchio.

    Our Guests Reviews

Our family first rented Villa Orvieto 11 years ago and, with the exception of last year (summer 2020), have returned every summer since. We have also rented villas in other areas of Italy every summer, but always return with many of the same friends to Villa Orvieto as part of our summer holidays in Italy.

Villa Orvieto is situated in a perfect location for exploring a beautiful, but less-touristed (Umbria), part of Italy. Day trips can be made to Rome and Florence, but there are many other towns that we love to visit as well including Assisi, Bevagna, Siena, Spoleto, Spello, Todi, San Gemini, Perugia, Lake Trasimeno, Pienza, Montalcino, Montepulciano, to name but a few of our favourites.  And the jewel, of course, is Orvieto, 20 minutes or so drive from Villa Orvieto. It’s one of the most beautiful hill towns in Italy with one of the most spectacular cathedrals in the country. We, and all the guests who have stayed with us over the years, have never tired of Orvieto and its winding cobblestone streets, medieval towers and piazzas, as well as its many great restaurants. After several years, we continue to find new places to go and interesting things to see.

The villa comfortably accommodates several families with each bedroom having its own full bathroom. The indoor spaces are open and airy, but as we are always there in the heat of August, we spend most of our time outdoors where there are many areas for relaxing and places for children to explore and play. The covered outdoor eating area is perfect for long, lingering dinners and there is a comfortable outdoor seating area nearby where we like to gather before dinner for a glass of Prosecco and a view of the setting sun. There is another large covered outdoor area at the “front” of the villa with cozy sofas and chairs overlooking a large green lawn which is perfect for quiet reading in the afternoon, or card games and long conversations after dinner with a view over the valley below and the stars above.

The pool and tennis court are very well used during our stay. The pool is located at a height that offers gorgeous views of the surrounding countryside. The last year that we stayed atVilla Orvieto, the owners added an outdoor tennis table which we also enjoyed. There is a hammock which is perfect for tired children (or adults) to have an afternoon nap.

In our minds, Villa Orvieto’s greatest treasure is the housekeeper, cook and solver of all problems, Mirela. The house is kept spotless and her cooking is wonderful. Our family and friends look forward to her cooking every year and while we know of many amazing restaurants in the area, we all prefer to “stay home” at night to enjoy Mirela's cooking and the comfortable outdoor spaces. Many of my family's favourite recipes were learned as I watched and chatted with Mirela in the kitchen.

Last year, we were unable to stay at Villa Orvietofor the first time in 10 years because of the pandemic and the resulting travel restrictions. We and our friends missed being there and can’t wait to be able to return and create more memories. For many of us, it is “our happy place”.

    Activities

In Orvieto, visit the fanciful Gothic Duomo, which soars seven stories high. Inside are magnificently vibrant and graphic frescoes of the Apocalypse by Luca Signorelli. Don’t miss the Pozzo di S. Patrizio, a historic well built by architect-engineer Antonio da Sangallo the Younger of Florence, between 1527 and 1537.

Gubbio is so perfect, it looks like a medieval movie set. The main monuments and sightseeings of the city include the Roman Theatre which is still in use for performances, the massive Palazzo dei Consoli, the duomo and the Palazzo Ducale.
Gubbio is best known for its palio, the Corsa dei Ceri, a spectacular run held every year on May 15, in which three teams run through throngs of cheering supporters up much of the mountain from the main square in front of the Palazzo dei Consoli to the basilica of S. Ubaldo, each team carrying a statue of their saint. Gubbios Roman theatre is a dramatic setting for summertime, open-air performances.

In Assisi, you’ll want to visit the famous basilica dedicated to Italy’s patron saint, Francis. Frescoes by Giotto vividly tell the story of St. Francis’s life. In the Piazza del Comune you’ll find a church inserted into the remains of the ancient Temple of Minerva. Above town stands the Rocca Maggiore, a fortress that protected citizens during attacks. For a dose of nature and spiritual contemplation, walk to the hermitage, the Eremo dell Carceri. Festival Calendimaggio, held on 1-5 May, is a re-enactment of medieval and Renaissance life in the form of a challenge between the upper faction and the lower faction of the town. It includes processions, theatrical presentations, flag-weavers and dances.

In Spoleto, visit the Roman theater and the archeological museum for a view of ancient Umbria. Go see the pre-Renaissance frescoes by Fra Lippo Lippi and Pinturicchio. The church of San Salvatore is one of Italy’s oldest and is set within the remains of an ancient Roman temple. Spoleto offers up culture, dramatic performances and musical concerts during the Festival dei Due Mondi.

In Deruta, stroll the color-splashed streets where Italy’s most famous hand-made ceramics are produced.

Visit charming Città di Castello, which packs a lot into such a small town, with palaces, churches, towers, and -of course- a castle, all sitting pretty and begging to be explored.

In Todi you’ll find all the main sights conveniently concentrated onto the Gothic Piazza del Popolo, which is itself set over top of an ancient Roman cistern system. Below town is the striking Renaissance church of Santa Maria della Consolazione.

In Perugia, be sure to see the frescoes by local artist Pietro Perugino in the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria and in the town hall’s Sala del Cambio. Step back to ancient times at the Etruscan arch and Etruscan well. Enjoy the lively atmosphere at the large fountain, the Fontana Maggiore. Sample the chocolates named for the city. Perugia plays host to international visitors with its acclaimed annual Umbria Jazz Festival, held each July. A wildly popular chocolate festival every October pays homage to the city’s sweet side.
