    Overview

Country living in the rolling Sienese hills

Olivella is a large country house located in the peaceful and beautiful countryside of the Val d'Orcia, within walking distance of the small hill village of San Giovanni d'Asso (1 km).

The large stone house has the advantage has the advantage of being composed of two independent houses, each with a private entrance. The houses can be easily connected via two internal doors, one on the ground floor and the other on the upper floor, but by closing the doors, the houses are completely separated. Therefore, this is the perfect place for two families traveling together.

House A is suitable for 4 persons, House B for 6 persons. You can choose to rent the entire house for 10 people or only house B. If renting only house B, the smaller house is closed (not rented to other guests to guarantee the privacy of the guests).

Each house has its own kitchen and living space, so you can easily divide your your group. You can be together again just as quickly when opening the connecting doors. Both dining rooms offer ample wooden tables, each for 10 people.

Olivella is located in a 1500 square meter garden. On the panoramic side there is a meadow with olive trees, pomegranate trees and some flowering shrubs leading to a beautiful pool. The view of the lovely, senese hilly landscape is wonderful. On the rear side of the house, a small sitting area by an old fountain invites you to linger.

Opposite the pool is a pool house with loggia to enjoy al fresco meals. A long table with two benches can accommodate 12 people. Here you can watch the children playing in the pool while you are relaxing with a glass of wine. In the pool house there is a small bathroom with shower. A small room (about 10 square meters) with kitchenette (2 hotplates, fridge and sink) is a convenient facility for light summer meals near the pool.

Olivella is an ideal choice for those who wish to be close to shopping, restaurants and cafes, yet be in a private home. The small village with approximately 300 inhabitans is just a 5-minute walk away. San Giovanni d`Asso has a simple restaurant, an 'osteria', a baker and butcher, a pharmacy, a post office, a supermarket and a Cappuccino bar.

In the upper part of the old town there is a very good restaurant. The village hosts the famous White Truffle Market in the month of November. The white truffle is prized and famous throughout Italy, as well are the other agricultural products of the area: excellent wines, oil, savoury cheeses and honey. There is no public transport in San Giovanni, therefore it is essential to have a car.

Beautiful private property, very peaceful and incredibly spacious. We used the house as our base to explore Tuscany each day and then return for downtime by the pool. Host was helpful connecting us with a local chef for meals at the house 2 out of 5 nights, which ended up being perfect. The sunrises and sunsets were amazing each day. We were a family of 5, but if we return well brings friends as well, there is ample space for 2 families.

Words can´t discribe the beauty! We had a wonderful time exploring all the towns and cities! Thank you for sharing your home with us! We will have many memories that will last a life time!

Thank you for sharing your villa with our family. We loved the villa and the help from Grazia and Daniele. The children specially loved the swimming pool, and we all enjoyed our days exploring the countryside. We dream of turning some day.

Frederica's place was fabulous. we were a group of 10 and the space was huge, never felt on top of each other. She was super responsive and offered great suggestions. The location is fabulous to visit many of the beautiful Tuscan villages. We had the truffle tasting experience by the pool and Frederica's children were so nice, and the truffle hunter such a character!!!

No negatives at all - house and grounds were lovely and nothing was missing. Locations was beautiful, though very much in the countryside.

    Dear Sir/Madam,
My family and I have just returned from a 2 week stay at one of your properties - Olivella. We had a wonderful time! Best regards,

Lovely, spacious villa, nice pool with a shady pool house, fantastic views, private but a few minutes walk from the beautiful Tuscan hill town of San Giovanni d'Asso.

Thank you for giving us departure information. We are so sorry we will not be able to say goodbye in person but want you to know that our two weeks at OLIVELLA with our children and grandchildren was the most special time we have ever had. You, Daniela and Guiliano treated us a special guests. Paolo and Lorenzo were wonderful and entertained the children as much as the adults. Please tell Grazia we are so sorry, our Italian is so broken that we could not properly thank her for two amazing meals. She made two different tiramisu so the children would not have expresso - what a thoughful and appreciated gesture! We will sing the praises of Tribbio to our freinds and fully expect some will decide to visit you too. We will also be sure to report our joy with you and OLIVELLA to Suzanne. Until the next time, which we hope will be soon!
    Fondly,
Janet and Tom Michaud, August 2014

Today is our last day at OLIVELLA. We have enjoyed it so much. The people in the little town are so nice. Though it´s starting to get hot, the evenings are still great, especially spending them in the pool.
We will miss Olivella so much but I now, we will come back, hopefully with more friends so we can share all the wonderful momories with them all ever again.
Thank you Federica and Daniela for such a wonderful place to visit. This place is so beautiful and your hospitality is great.
    Ciao for now!

Olivella was the ideal home for our extended family of four adults and four children. Having two kitchens to include two washing machines and two dish washers was a godsend. The home is spacious and extremely clean and comfortable. We enjoyed the pool and grounds with beautiful views of surrounding towns and countryside. Federica and her children, Caterina and Lorenzo, were extremely welcoming, friendly and helpful. The house book’s recommended restaurants were all fantastic as was the watercolor lesson with Liz Cochrane, a local ex-pat artist. One of the best places we have ever stayed!

We had a lovely 10 day stay with with a party of 9, including grandparents and young children and babies. The place was perfect as a base to explore tuscany - beautiful, spacious, peaceful but within an hours drive to plenty to keep us busy. Amazing views of surrounding countryside and a nice outdoor area with lots of olive and fruit trees. Clean kitchen and plenty of supplies for us to cook for 9 daily. Well functioning dishwasher and laundry machine which we used daily. Kid friendly - built in baby gates at the top of both sets of stairs, baby chair, baby crib, and lots of fun toys and pool floats for the kids to splash around with. AC worked great for when we needed it, but house was relatively cool even during a august heat wave even without it on. The host and her family were lovely and responsive and very personable in both checking in and out. A great place for families to stay!

There is SO much I could say about this gorgeous Tuscan farmhouse.
Our family of nine had the most wonderful, memorable stay here in Federica's beautiful rental home.
We were greeted by members of the family, including Lorenzo, Caterina and Federica's husband. They were all so helpful and welcoming.
The property is expansive with olive trees growing all over. The views are sheer beauty and we could see other hill towns and of course, nearby San Giovanni d'Asso.
The pool and loggia with such comfortable seating was shady and delightful.
Downstairs there are TWO well equipped kitchens and dining and living areas. We all had so much room to spread out. There are dishwashers and a washing machine.
Five lovely bedrooms upstairs...each with it's own bath and stunning vistas from the windows! Also an additional beautiful "sitting room" upstairs.
Federica's attention to detail and very tasteful furnishings were evident throughout.
We lived our Tuscan dream and would love to return!
    Laura June 2023

We loved the relaxtion and comfort of OLIVELLA after touring Rome, Florence and Venice! Although a bit to chilly for much swimming, we loved reading by the pool. At the crackling fire we had wonderful talks and the hospitalbe comfort of this place was more than we had hoped for!
    Were off to Amalfi...
Ciao - The Paynes, June 2014

For our three week stay, OLIVELLA was the perfect spot, either for lazing about or for leading out to so many nearby wonderful tours and attractions. We take day trips to Cortona and the Chianti country, where we had excellent lunch. Also the wine tasting tour was gorgeous.
Thanks so much to Federica and Andrea who made us feel so welcome here. We hope to return sometime in the future to repeat this wonderful experience.
    Mille grazie!

A wonderful house in a beautiful area; very calm and relaxing.

Federica, the owner of Olivella, is a very nice and friendly person. The house is beautiful and they take care for the pool as much as possible. The right place to relax and to enjoy this part of tuscanny. Giovanni d`Asso is very small, only few shops and only one good restaurant. We alwalys had to drive for al least 30 min to reach something. We only would recommend to enlarge the numbers of plates, cups, glasses and kitchenstuff. And the beds could be a little more comfortable.

    Wonderful

Two grandparent and two young families - 5 children under 7. Quite a long drive from Pisa airport and arriving late found difficulties with road sining. Olivella villas tiny notice. Accommodation was perfect for two families because no matter how well you get on, it was lovely to have your own space. We all mucked in together anyway! Down side was lack of fans for air conditioning as bedrooms were small and very hot for children especially. Very clean and pool area very well maintained but they were very reluctant to give us lilos for the chairs which was very annoying as they were necessary and most uncomfortable without. Even though we arrived later than expected due to road signing the pre arranged supper was most disappointing and very expensive. A great pity as we really looked forward to having most of the catering done for us. In the event we did not use this service again. Despite the drive, it was a perfect and very peaceful location and we all said it was the best holiday ever. And with the above provisos, I would recommend it to anyone.

    Dear Bettina,

We have already used your properties in the past (La Corte and Olivella) and have been more than satisfied. This year our planning is late as usual ! Do you have any properties available for the last 2 weeks of August; south of Sienna, West of Lucca, south of Florence ... . 8 Pax + pool ... no sharing with anyone ... . Superior standard as usual. Thanks for your reply.

    Activities

San Giovanni d'Asso is located in the Val d'Orcia, a beautiful valley in the south of Tuscany, listed since 2004 in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The geographical location of the property allows day trips in all directions. Siena, Pienza, Cortona, Arezzo, Assisi, Orvieto, San Gimignano, Volterra, Perugia, Viterbo, Florence and a wealth of other rewarding sites and attractions are within easy reach.

In San Quirico d'Orcia make sure you see the Horti Leonini, an early Renaissance garden, as well as the western door in the city wall and the Collegiata (main church).

Montalcino is beautifully situated on a hill inhabited since Etruscan times, swathed in vineyards and olive groves. It is a quiet, affluent, attractive town with pretty buildings and flower-filled squares, and many shops selling the Brunello di Montalcino.

Montepulcino is a graceful Tuscan hill town, best known for its Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which was being praised by connoisseurs over 200 years ago and can certainly contend with Italy's best today.

Pienza, the unfinished 'utopian' city, was commissioned by Pope Pius II in 1459.

Chiusi is one of our favourites because of its unpretentious liveliness. Compared to Montepulciano it is uncontaminated by tourism. Chiusi has a railway station - from here it is a quick ride to the city center of Rome.

Monticchiello is a pleasant walled village, whose crooked watch-tower is visible from afar. Next to the church is a small shop which sells local linens (towels, bedspreads) and materials in pure linen. They use traditional methods and patterns and the results are extremely attractive.

Visit the abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore and the semi-derelict monastery of Sant'Anna in Camprena - a very romantic setting which served as location for the film 'The English Patient'.

Sant'Antimo is surely one of the loveliest Romanesque buildings in all of Italy. It is hard to imagine a more sympathetic combination of architectural grace and natural setting.

And last but not least the landscape in this region of Tuscany is spectacular: The Crete Senesi are the eroded clay hills in the Orcia valley. These strange, pale, barren looking slopes, with their bare cliffs, broken gullies and white Jurassic limestone, look altogehter more lunar than terrestial.

    Hot spas in Tuscany:
Tuscany is famous for its Hot springs, belonging to a geothermical system that more or less encircles Monte Amiata, the most spectacular being Saturnia in the south west of the region. Steaming water collects in a number of white limestone basins - a rare natural spectacle and great fun to bathe in! Swimming possible both in the natural basins and in smart thermal baths. Saturnia offers a wide range of comforts and even a sauna.

Close to the property is Bagno Vignoni which has been popular since Etruscan times. St. Catherine of Siena is said to have appreciated its thearpeutic qualities, as is Lorenzo the Magnificent, whose family built the splendid arcaded pool - a kind of flooded, bubbling piazza, famously used by Tarkowsky for some of the more surreal passages of his film 'Nolstalgia'. Not far from this antique piazza there is a hotel with a lovely open air swimming pool, fed from hot springs. This is also available to external guests.

Bagni San Filippo may go into the books as the world's smallest thermal spa - a telephone booth, a few old houses, outdoor spring in the middle of the woods with glistening limestone formations and one small hotel with a public pool.

The Montepulciano thermal springs can also be enjoyed in an indoor thermal swimming pool.

In Rapolano Terme you will find two baths: A Turkish steam bath is available in the Querciolaia thermal baths; the panorama in the newer San Giovanni Terme is just wonderful!
