Overview
In a landscape of rare beauty
This elegant farmstead is located in the most coveted region of central Tuscany. Strategically positioned in the middle of the Golden Triangle - Florence, Siena, Pisa - the property sits on top of a hill, surrounded by 24 acres or vineyards, olive groves and woods with stunning landscape views.
The property takes its name from the vast groves of olive trees that surround it in every direction, and will impress its guests with stunning views of the gently rolling hills leading to the ancient towers of San Gimignano. The silver-grey of the olives blends with the dark green of cypresses, creating a spectacular show of colours. The surrounding landscape resembles the background of Renaissance paintings admired in the paintings of Leonardo, Botticelli and Benozzo Gozzoli.
The property consists of three buildings: the villa with tower of the property owner, adjecting to it the house Villa Olivo transformed into four guest apartments and some metres distant a detached former barn (Capanna Olivo / also featured in our portfolio).
The four apartments are an atmospheric ambience designed with loving care for details. The layout and the decoration was a project of the property owner Paola. She invested a lot of time and love in choosing the right marble, tiles and light fixtures for the kitchens and the bathrooms, and in finding the right material for the sofas and armchairs as well as having a few choice pieces of antique family furniture restored. Amenities include air conditioning (although you'll rarely need it, as the hilltop location allows for maximum circulation of Tuscan breezes), satellite TV, radio, cooker, fridge, microwave, electric kettle, toaster, American coffee machine and hair dryer.
Outside, each apartment has its terrace for al fresco dining, and every day the sunset is the very special event. A beautiful garden path decked with flowers leads to a magnificent Mediterranean style swimming pool with Roman steps. On return from a day out, you can relax here whiling away late summer afternoons with a favourite novel.
The guests are free to stroll through the olive groves and adjacent vineyards, and sample the Chianti wines and olive oil produced by the nearby family-owned farm. The farm organises wine tastings free of charge in the wine cellar, and the recently awarded Super Tuscan wine is excellent.
At walking distance there are a family-owned Tuscan Restaurant (bring a torch if you like to walk - as the street is not illuminated), a mini-market and one of the oldest churches of the region. Just a few miles down the hill there is Certaldo Alto, the picturesque, walled medieval hilltop town renowned for being the birthplace of the poet and writer Giovanni Boccaccio, the author of "The Decameron".
In this region you can dine in one of the many local restaurants known for their delicious Tuscan food. In Certaldo the guests may attend music concerts und cultural festivals. For longer day trips and lovers of the Italian Renaissance, Florence, Volterra, Siena and Pisa are all within one hour by car.
The villa's location only 8 km from the railway station of Certaldo is a good base to visit Florence and Siena even without a car: You can park your car in Certaldo (parking next to the railway station) and take the train in both directions. During the week, trains to Florence/Siena and back go regularly (approx. every 1.5 or 2 hours). The train ride takes less than one hour. In Florence the train will take you to the main train station which is right in the centre of Florence - it is just a short walk from the station "Santa Maria Novella" to the Cathedral or the Uffizi. In Siena the railway station is located approx. 3 km from centre, and you have to take a bus to reach the old town on top of the hill. One hour of driving takes you to the sea.

Great vacation spot in Tuscany
We really loved our stay. The staff are friendly and welcoming, the location is great and about a 30 minute drive from many places and it's convenient for a family to stay. We used the kitchen and were able to cook some of our meals there. I would definitely stay here again in the future.

Perfect family vacation
We came to Tuscany to celebrate my 60th birthday with the whole family. Capanna Olivo and Mahonia fully met our expectations. We stayed here 10 years ago and look forward to returning again. The views, the pool and the house (air conditioned) are the best there is. If I have to make a recommendation, the kitchen equipment is a bit spartan, we cooked ourselves. The wine tasting we can recommend.

Incredible time for three generations!
We loved everything about our time! What a beautiful area. We chose to take day trips for each of our 5 days there, but if one just wanted to relax, It couldn't be a better place. The pool and gardens are lovely and the accommodations are very comfortable. Gina and Paola were so welcoming and helpful. Thank you thank you! We hope to return someday.

We very much enjoyed our family visit in the summer of 2017, I cried tears of joy when I arrived with the beauty of the villa and surrounding landscape, and cried tears of sadness when we had to leave! We would love the opportunity to re visit in the summer of 2022.

We used Villa Olivo as a base to explore Tuscany. A perfect central location to do this from and a wonderful place to be the heart and centre of our stay in Tuscany. We absolutely loved being there, thank you Gina and Paola and we would return in a heartbeat!
Magia italiana

Left on Sep 10, 2017 for a stay in Sep 2017

As you may recall, we rented the Tuscany Villa Olivio in the summer 2007 and because we were very pleased with these accommodations, and in particular the service we received from you, it would please us if you are able to help us once more.
We are now planning our next trip to Italy, and would very much like to go to the Amalfi Coast especially the Sorrento area in July 2011.
As we did in the summer 2007 we require the same high standard as offered at Villa Olivio. Hope you will be able to help us, and are looking forward to your return mail.
Thanks and best regards,
B. Agerholm, September 2009
Our visit was wonderful!
Thank you so much for helping making our trip so easy and enjoyable. We rented the Capanna villa at Villa Olivo the last week in March and it couldn't have been a more splendid place. We arrived after dark, and the next morning we were awestruck by the magnificent view we awoke to outside our windows. It was even better than we had dreamed. The location was perfect for day trips to Florence, Sienna, Pisa, the neighboring hill towns, and it wasn't even a bad drive to the Cinque Terra. The property owners were very friendly despite the slight language barrier, which we made the best of. The villa was furnished perfectly for a very comfortable stay, and we enjoyed every minute of it. If only we had more time to stay.
Please pass along our gratitude to the property owners and compliments on a magnificent place.

Cara Paola,

Activities
The villa is in the perfect location, just 40 minutes outside Florence. It overlooks a spectacular valley of vineyards, and the sunsets are amazing. In the morning, fog envelopes the valley floor, and the ancient towered city of San Gimignano rises on the opposite end of the valley, which you can see from the villa. A few minutes away is the small town of Certaldo, which has a modern grocery store and other shops.
The Chianti area: Famous for its wines - the Chianti Classico - this area of Tuscany has more than just world-class oenological pleasures to offer. The curious visitor will come accross many delightful villages, each of them with a history of its own. Let us simply mention lesser known gems such as the romanesque church of Sant'Appiano, the Basilica of Impruneta, the fortified castle of Monteriggioni and the roofless romanesque abbey of San Galgano which are all close. And don’t miss the Saturday market in the small town of Greve.
San Gimignano is a small walled medieval hill town in the province of Siena, Tuscany, north-central Italy. It is mainly famous for its medieval architecture, especially its towers, which may be seen from several kilometers outside the town. The town also is known for the white wine, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, grown in the area.
Florence: The city lies on the Arno River and is known for its history and its importance in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance, especially for its art and architecture. A centre of medieval European trade and finance, the city is often considered the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance; in fact, it has been called the Athens of the Middle Ages. It was long under the de facto rule of the Medici family. From 1865 to 1870 the city was also the capital of the Kingdom of Italy. The historic centre of Florence continues to attract millions of tourists each year and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982.
Siena: The Sienese have no doubt, their town is the most beautiful in all of Tuscany, if not all of Italy. Siena has remained a Gothic city. Renaissance, one of the major influences in Florence, hardly affected the urban development of Siena. The city unfolds around the main shell-shaped square called "Il Campo." Twice a year the famous horse race known as the "Palio" takes place here. The narrow streets are lined with old shops and small cafes, while churches and museums are real treasures of the fourteenth century.
Restaurants: eating out is a way of getting to know the area. Simple local trattorias rub their shoulders with more sophisticated restaurants specialised in refined cuisine. Fresh local produce allways plays the leading role.
Local craftsmanship: hand-made terracotta pots from Impruneta, hand painted pottery from Montelupo, mouth-blown crystal glass from the neighbouring village Colle Val d'Elsa, not to mention the south bank of the Arno river in Florence where you will find a multitude of craftsmen working silver, leather, wood, glass, paper and metal.
Sports: riding stable 5 km, tennis court 10 km, beauty spa with sauna 15 km, golf course 35 km.
